Biography
I am Kevin Armbruster, a Research Associate and PhD Candidate at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). I have a focus on Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) and a broad interest in machine learning (ML) systems and their practical applications. Currently, my research explores the information needs of (expert) practitioners in AutoML, the human-in-the-loop paradigm, and more efficient ways to integrate human knowledge during the optimization process.
Before transitioning into research, I spent six years in the software industry as a full-stack software developer at Markant Gruppe, where I worked on developing and deploying software systems. In this role, I collaborated closely with business departments and customers, engaging in feedback-driven development to ensure that software solutions met real-world needs. This industry background continues to shape my research approach, bridging practical engineering challenges with academic insights.
I hold a Master’s degree in Information Systems Engineering (Wirtschaftsinformatik) from Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt), where I focused on (deep) machine learning and data-driven systems. During my studies, I also spent a semester abroad at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where I deepened my knowledge of artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems, and human-centered computing.
My goal is to contribute to the development of more efficient and robust AutoML tools that can support diverse domains and users, while also considering the ethical and societal impacts of automation in ML.
