Research Interests

Interactive position- and orientation tracking is a major prerequisite for augmented reality in general. The focus of my work is on the management of tracking and tracking accuracy in industrial environments.

The foundations for this have been laid during the trackframe project (2006-2009). Its focus was the integration of various kinds of sensors for the purpose of 6 DoF pose / position / orientation tracking in heterogeneous wide-area environments. The basic concept are spatial relationship patterns which represent recurring tracking/calibration/fusion problems and can be solved by a certain algorithm. Spatial Relationship Patterns can be combined to form a graph structure called the Spatial Relationship Graph (SRG). It represents the spatial relationships that are relevant for a certain tracking environment and at the same time provides all information that is needed to instantiate a dataflow which derives the spatial relationships needed by the AR/VR application. These core concepts are provided in terms of the Ubitrack library.

One major aspect of my research is the question how these concepts can help to facilitate design and maintenance of complex tracking environments. To this end, a graphical planning and analysis tool called trackman (trackframe manager) is being developed. It comprises functionality for off-line planning and configuration of tracking environments in terms of Spatial Relationship Graphs. Furthermore, concepts are being developed which allow for the evaluation of accuracy of tracking data within an existing tracking environment. Different sensors can be tested and the results can be compared.

In the context of the AVILUS project (since 2009) I now work on Monte Carlo simulations to assess the accuracy properties of various industrial tracking environments. For example, it is possible to simulate the resulting AR application error (e.g. 3D measurement or 2D video overlay error) based on the assumption of known sensor input noise. This work is integrated with trackman and the SRG concepts described above.

My Ph.D. advisor is Prof. Gudrun Klinker.
