Overview

Interested in making it easier for people to manage their online privacy and security? Apply to participate in the Summer School on Usable Privacy and Security that will take place right after CHI 2023 in a former Cistercian monastery in the beautiful landscapes of Bavaria near the Austrian border. The school is ideal for early stage Ph.D students, postdocs, and others who are interested in learning about multidisciplinary human-centered approaches for tackling privacy and security challenges and develop research plans that can lead to publications following the summer school.

Support: Accommodation, meals, and local transportation from Munich to Raitenhaslach/ Burghausen (and back) will be covered for all selected participants.

Agenda

The summer school will feature a keynote speech and include a mix of lessons from prominent academic and industry scholars, who work on interdisciplinary research and topics within the domain of Usable Privacy and Security. Summer school students will participate in guided hands-on activities for applying what they have learned to devise novel solutions and/or research ideas for addressing practical challenges in privacy and security. The plans additionally include a lab tour of an industry site in Munich. We also plan for an excursion to the world’s longest castle that is located in Burghausen.

Technical Lab Team:

  • Sarah Delgado Rodriguez, Felix Dietz, and Oliver Hein (Universität der Bundeswehr, Germany) will facilitate a technical lab program at the Summer School.

Participants:

  • We have now selected a group of 21 graduate students and post-doctoral researchers for participation at the Summer School. Participants come from academic institutions in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, the United States, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Application Procedure

If you are interested in applying, please send an email to summerschool23.ct@xcit.tum.de with the subject line: Application for Participation in the Summer School on Usable Privacy and Security. Please include the following:

  • Latest short CV (about 2 pages),
  • A brief letter of recommendation from your Ph.D./postdoc advisor (or equivalent)
  • A two-three paragraph statement on your motivation for applying to the summer school

For fullest consideration, please apply by Tuesday, February 28, 2023. We plan to announce decisions by Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

The summer school will meet in the ceremonial hall of the former monastery. We have also reserved several seminar rooms for group work.
