In a recent R&D Management publication Martin Kauschinger, Maximilian Schreieck and Helmut Krcmar show how platform owners can optimize the design of knowledge boundary resources.

Researchers from the KrcmarLab have recently published an article in R&D Management entitled “The Role of Knowledge Boundary Resources for Platform Ecosystems – Insights and Design Implications from SAP’s Business Technology Platform. In this paper, the authors analyzed how third-party developers integrated knowledge boundary resources into their development work and propose design recommendations for platform owners.

Specifically, the authors analyzed 23 interviews using procedures from grounded theory methodology and developed a process model that explains the integration of knowledge boundary resources into the development practices of third-party developers. Based on this model, the authors explain the emergence of a knowledge boundary resource-purpose fit that shapes the selection and usage of knowledge boundary resources. By distilling four use-cases with a particularly favorable knowledge boundary resource-purpose fit, the authors propose recommendations for platform owners to optimize the design of their knowledge boundary resources.
